About Korean Merida

Korean Mérida is a vibrant Yucateco-Koreano learning community founded by Soseul Park in 2013. Since its inception, Korean Mérida has grown to encompass over 1,650 members and continues to expand, fostering meaningful connections and cultural exchange.

 

The mission of Korean Mérida is threefold:

1. To provide an accessible and welcoming environment for Mexicans interested in learning the Korean language and culture.

2. To reestablish and preserve the Korean language and cultural heritage among Korean descendants and diaspora in Mexico.

3. To study and address the dynamics of cultural attrition among Korean descendants, contributing to informed efforts in preserving Korean cultural identity.

This community was born out of my passion for bridging cultures and my recognition of the growing interest in Korean culture in Mexico. Having witnessed the global rise of Korean culture through K-pop, Korean dramas, and cuisine, I wanted to create a space where people could not only learn about Korea but also form genuine connections with its traditions and language. Simultaneously, as a member of the Korean diaspora, I felt a strong responsibility to support Korean descendants in reconnecting with their roots and preserving their unique cultural identity in a foreign land.

Over the years, Korean Mérida has achieved several milestones. We’ve hosted cultural workshops, language classes, and celebratory events like Chuseok (Korean Harvest Festival) and Seollal (Lunar New Year). These events bring together people from all walks of life to share and experience the richness of Korean traditions. We’ve also collaborated with local organizations and institutions to promote cross-cultural understanding and education.

In addition to our in-person gatherings, we’ve adapted to changing times by offering online language classes, virtual cultural events, and webinars to reach a broader audience. Our members, both local and international, reflect the diverse interests and backgrounds of those who are passionate about Korea.
